Description

Travel at your own pace on this relaxed self-drive itinerary as you explore the fiery volcanic zone of the South Shore, geothermal deserts of the uninhabited interior, the lush vegetation of Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve in the north and witness treasured landmarks along the historical West Coast. Along the way enjoy spectacular scenery with short or long day hikes, soak up some rays from the Midnight Sun and relax in the comfort of minimal accommodation changes.

After an evening exploring the delights of Reykjavik, leave the city behind and drive the rugged Reykjanes peninsula where you can relax in the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, marvel at Krysuvik's geothermal wonders and witness stunning coastal wildlife as you make your way to Hella, your base for the next 3 nights.

From Hella, daily excursions can be taken to walk the hidden valley of Thorsmork Nature Reserve, hike amongst the untouched nature of Landmannalaugar and take in the impressive sights of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss.

Day 5 takes you north along the famous Golden Circle route. Visit the majestic Gullfoss and Geysir before traversing Iceland's uninhabited interior highlands with time for a unique trek through the vibrant thermal areas that lie between Langjokull and Hofsjokull glaciers. You will arrive in Akureyri, Capital of the North, this evening.

Spend the next few days exploring the north. Lake Myvatn Nature Reserve offers some excellent easy hikes and you can soak any aching muscles in the thermal waters of the Nature Spa. Godafoss, Dettifoss and Jokulsargljufur National Park are all on the agenda before returning to explore Akureyri in a little more depth.

After heading in a south-westerly direction, from Bifrost you can hike in 3000 year old lava fields, around ancient craters and discover beautiful waterfalls before driving the scenic coastline of Hvalfjordur Fjord arriving back in Reykjavik for some final city exploration.
