Description

Your northern Tanzania adventure begins with the small but scenic Lake Manyara, excellent for bird watching, and offering the chance to spot a legendary Lake Manyara tree-climbing lion. This is a gentle introduction to your safari holiday, an attractive park through which a mainly forested driving route winds its way between the banks of the soda water lake and the impressive Great Rift Escarpment. Elephant, giraffe, buffalo and wildebeest are often found drinking at the lake or scenic river banks.

Moving on, the Maasai word "Seringit" means "endless plains", a wholly appropriate word to describe the largest of Tanzania's parks. During the Great migration months of May to July, stretching to the infinite horizon as far as the eye can see, are herds of wildebeest, gazelle and zebra, a truly breath-taking phenomena. For the rest of the year, migration patterns find the herds more spread out across both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where they give birth each year; affording exceptional wildlife viewing all over this vast landscape, which enjoys some of the highest concentration of wildlife in the world, including big cats, in particular, cheetah.

Ngorongoro Crater represents one of the highlights of this safari with a myriad of ecosystems all combined within a deep enclosed crater where wildlife is prolific. Then for a complete change of scene and atmosphere, descend to the volcanic agricultural highlands, and an opportunity to explore the old plantation villages around Karatu. At this point of the holiday, you can choose to complement your trip with either a relaxing stay on the exotic island of Zanzibar, or more wildlife adventures in Tarangire National Park.

Tarangire National Park is reputed to be one of the best locations in Tanzania for concentration of wildlife during the dry season of July to September, it is also a renowned haven for birdwatchers and ornithologists. This is a beautiful area consisting of grass and flood plains, acacia woodland and regions of dense bush studded with baobab trees. With a prolific list of over 300 bird species, all year round residents of eland, lesser kudu, gazelle, waterbuck and giraffe, plus the occasional sighting of rhino, added to which the swell of wildebeest, hartebeest, zebra and elephants during the drying of the Maasai Steppe to the east, this is an impressive small park in the north of the country.
