Since the beginning of time the Northern Lights have been a part of our world and for thousands of years their origin was shrouded in intrigue and mystery. Fascinating stories were created by our ancestors and passed down through generations, evolving along the way into the myths and legends we hear today. Some believed the dancing lights were spirits of the dead, others thought they were gifts from the Gods and, in Finland, it was believed they were a result of sparks from the tail of the fire fox running quickly over the snow. It is only in more recent times, with a greater understanding of our solar system, that we now know why, and how, the Northern Lights occur and that only makes them an even more fascinating spectacle to behold.

Seeing the Northern Lights has long been a feature on most peoples ‘bucket list’ and one of the best places to see them is Lapland. We have been selling Northern Lights holidays for over 20 years and I am lucky enough to have had the pleasure of witnessing them personally several times and it’s something I will never tire of. It’s hard to find the right words to describe the feeling… mesmerising, magical, beautiful, I’m not sure these words even come close, but there is something about gazing up at a star-studded sky and seeing the auroras dance that that is truly humbling and an absolute privilege.

There are no hard and fast rules when seeking the Northern Lights, however one thing is certain, what you do need is a clear night. A cloudy sky is your biggest obstacle and whilst Lapland is less affected by coastal weather systems than other popular Northern Lights destinations, Mother Nature isn’t always kind. There is nothing worse than heading out in the hope and anticipation of seeing this amazing phenomenon and glazing up to a cloud filled sky. But now, we believe we have found the perfect solution and are more than excited to present ‘The Northern Lights Flight’!

Previously the preserve of the rich and famous this fabulous experience is now within reach of all intrepid travellers. Departing from Rovaniemi Airport in Finnish Lapland you too can take to the Arctic night skies and share an unforgettable journey in search of the Northern Lights.
