Celebrate the Chinese New Year in 2012:

the Year to Discover the Dragon

Monday 23rd January is start of the Chinese New Year, which in 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. To mark this occasion, Wildlife & Wilderness are introducing a new itinerary to their diverse portfolio, entitled, 'Dragons & Devils', which will allow visitors to see the dragons and devils of Tasmania up close and personal.

"The Year of the Dragon brings to the forefront a creature that has played a significant role throughout history and is embedded into cultures across the planet", comments Dr. Steve Banner of Wildlife & Wilderness. He continues, "As such, we wanted to introduce the opportunity for visitors to go to this beautiful and diverse island and discover the Weedy Sea Dragons found just off the coast. Of course Tasmania is renowned for the endangered Tasmanian Devils and so combining the two offers a unique wildlife experience. As ever our itineraries can be personalised to give travellers just the trip they are looking for."

The itinerary is best enjoyed between November and March, the summer season in Tasmania, when the Weedy Sea Dragons are at their most sedentary (due to the males carrying eggs until the end of March), allowing easier spotting whilst diving. The Weedy Sea Dragons live amongst the giant kelp forests and are more colourful and larger than their cousins, Leafy Sea Dragons, which are found off the coast of South Australia. Divers will enjoy the wall diving found here, whilst inquisitive seals are also easily spotted.

The itinerary additionally includes a visit to Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park, located approximately an hour from Hobart. The centre educates visitors on the projects being undertaken to help save the Tasmanian Devil from extinction by the mystery cancer which is threatening this voracious and iconic animal. Watch them feed, snarl and generally be devilish in the Park.

Dragons & Devils itinerary (can be tailored to suit requirements):
