Highlights: Shaumari - Azraq - Dana - Petra - Wadi Rum - Aqaba, some of the important sites of the Jordanian Royal Society for Nature Conservation.
The deserts of Jordan once teemed with living creatures. The plant and animal life that has survived the modern age is beginning, with help, to flourish again and Wildlife & Wilderness would like to show you the delights left behind by the tourist crowds, who in their haste head direct to the more well-known sites.
Firstly, you will visit the Shaumari Reserve, where Jordan has played a key role in rescuing the Arabian Oryx from extinction through a captive breeding and reintroduction programme, other animals include the Nubian ibex, Syrian wild ass, ostrich and common gazelle. Also in the eastern desert lies the Azraq Wetlands Reserve, a visit here can be very rewarding especially during the spring and autumn migrations, when a large variety of birds can be seen, including bee-eaters, fly-catchers, shrikes, snipe, pipits, hoopoes, harriers, eagles, storks and many more.
Following sightseeing along the King's Highway, you will enjoy a full day's walk accompanied by a naturalist in Dana Nature Reserve learning about the variety of flora, fauna and ecosystems.
Guided tour of Petra, and then onto the hauntingly beautiful Wadi Rum, one of the great natural landscapes of the world. Here you will camp and explore this vast reserve, watching for hyrax, hares, fennec foxes, Arabian sandcat and more, particularly at dawn and dusk. Finally, for a complete change in environment, onto the bustling resort of Aqaba; the main reason for being here is to experience the incredible underwater world of the Red Sea, full of breathtaking, colourful marine life. Time for a rewarding dip!
