The small and quiet town of Longyearbyen offers the perfect weekend getaway. By the end of October the sun struggles to reach beyond the horizon and Svalbard heads towards a period of darkness known as the 'Polar Night'. Embrace the mesmerising beauty of this magical light and experience life as a Trapper in unique accommodation, discover the vast wilderness on a dog sled safari and hike on glaciers surrounded by Arctic silence.
On arrival in Longyearbyen you will have chance to take a stroll around this former mining town and grab a bite to eat before being transported to the Trappers Station for a night in a traditional rustic Trappers hut. It's back to basics at the Station with no running water and wood fired heating but you are rewarded the next day with an exhilarating dog sled safari through the mystical darkness with the chance of seeing the northern lights during the day! Svalbard is one of the few places on Earth you can witness the Aurora during daytime hours.
Your final 2 nights will be spent in more modern surroundings, yet still rustically immersed in traditional Trapper style, at the Basecamp Trappers Hotel. Dine out on local delicacies and enjoy evenings gazing at the dark night skies from the glass roofed lounge.
Your final outing will be by snowshoe exploring the snow-covered wilderness with an experienced local guide as you head to Longyearbyen or Lars Glacier. This is a magical experience under the glow of the moon and stars as they reflect off the snow.
After a relaxing morning it's time to depart Longyearbyen. You may wish to spend some time at the local museum to discover more of Svalbard's historical past and fascinating present before heading to the airport.
