Jordan

Classic Jordan

Highlights: Desert Castles - Amman - Jerash - Ajlun - Dead Sea - King's Highway - Petra - Wadi Rum - Aqaba - Umm al Rassas.

As a full itinerary to Jordan, which Wildlife & Wilderness really recommends, it includes time to experience the barren desert of the east with its isolated castles and ancient hunting lodges as well as other sites. First you explore the city of Amman, originally built like Rome on seven hills. In the hilly north of the country you can enjoy lunch overlooking the Sea of Galilee from the ruins of Umm Qais. Of course you will also visit the wonderful ruins of Jerash and the fortress of Saladdin at Ajlun and journey down the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea and the lowest point on Earth.

After a pleasant night at the Dead Sea drive up to Mount Nebo where Moses is said to have been buried. Continue down the King’s Highway to Madaba to see the mosaics including the map of the holy land. Further on you will cross the immense Wadi Mujeb before reaching the crusader castle at Kerak. Late in the day you arrive at Petra. It is worth spending a couple of days exploring this city of stupendous tombs and other buildings carved from the rock. Wildlife & Wilderness offer guided sightseeing on the first day and on the second day you can visit the High Place of Sacrifice for spectacular views and the magnificent El Deir monastery high above Wadi Araba.

The Wadi Rum is an equally spectacular desert landscape where huge monoliths of rocky mountains rise from the sands. It was in the desert here that Lawrence of Arabia lived and camel-riding Bedouin can still be seen today. It is a truly magical place to camp out, far from civilisation. Frequently, our colleagues in the Amman office will come down to entertain you with true Jordanian hospitality, a memorable highlight of the your trip. To round off your trip we have included a couple of days to snorkel, dive or just relax on the Red Sea at Aqaba before visiting one of the best preserved but least visited mosaics in the Middle East. A farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant in Amman brings to an end a wonderful trip to this fascinating and friendly country.
