Description

The far east of Finland, on the border with Russia, is an excellent location from which to observe some of Europe's greatest wildlife. European brown bears, wolves, wolverine, beavers and birds such as capercaillie, black grouse, golden eagle, hawk owl and black-throated diver plus numerous other species can be seen. The silent forests are a delight to walk through and ideally situated between two wildlife centres is Elimyssalo protected forest. This short break links these two centres via the route through this forest which is part of Finland's greatest walking trail, the UKK.

You first night will be spent at a cosy base deep in the boreal forest and almost totally surrounded by a lake. The next morning you can explore locally before setting off in the afternoon to a hide where you will spend the night watching for wolves. A resident pack lives close by in the Russian border zone and often when bears are around there can be some confrontation. This makes for exciting viewing as two denizens of the forest come face to face.

The hides are comfortable and have ample room to lie out and rest when you're not observing wildlife. A guide will be with you throughout and will provide food and drinks during your stay in the hide, which may be up to 12 hours. There are basic toilet facilities.

After a night in the hide return transfer back to base, freshen up and enjoy breakfast. Pack up and set off on a hike with your guide through Elimyssalo protected forest. The walk is undulating and the forest always changing. You will pass across marsh on board walks to reach a lake and your overnight halt at a laavu, a traditional Finnish outdoor shelter with a fireplace. A campfire dinner is cooked and stories told into the night.

The following day you complete the hike with approximately 15km out to Viiksimo and Boreal Wildlife Centre on the other side of the protected forest. From the centre you take a short transfer in the early evening to the hides for a night viewing bears. With luck other mammals will appear too. Finally you return to BWC for breakfast and a shower before departure.
