Namibia is a country known for its dry desert landscapes, but venture to Etosha National Park and you find a giant salt pan that fills with water each year after the rains and offers vital water resources for a myriad of big game and wading birds. Head into the park at sunrise to catch a glimpse of the waking lions, cheetah or maybe the ever elusive leopard, as well as herds of plains game, elephants and giraffes.
Your journey in search of big cats continues at the world renowned Okonjima, home of the AfriCat centre. The work done by AfriCat is invaluable, rescuing injured or endangered cats and releasing them back into safer areas. This is a chance to really learn about the cats, their habitat, movements, development and the potential conflicts with humans. Activities include radio-tracking collared leopards, an up close and personal meeting with the cheetahs and morning coffee and cakes at the lion lapa. Okonjima has something for everyone, and children are very welcome; families and small groups can be accommodated at the Bush Suite, The Villa or Bush Camp for children over 12 years old. These destinations offer prime predator viewing and a chance to get involved in animal conservation.
