Description

Taking in the key highlights of the south of Iceland this self-drive holiday offers spectacular scenery, iconic landmarks and boutique country hotels. From steaming vents, boiling water and tremendous cascading waterfalls to the splendid isolation of the countryside, Iceland is another world. During your time here you will start to gain a good appreciation of this beautiful country and there are plenty of activities to be enjoyed.

The adventure begins in Reykjavik. After a short flight from the UK you will collect your AWD hire car and head into the city for a couple of days. Here, there is time to explore Iceland's vibrant capital with its colourful buildings against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and historical Viking past intermingled with its 21st century appeal.

As you leave the city behind and head out into the countryside you will stay in luxury wilderness hotels, each in a perfect location for a quiet winter escape. The views across snow topped mountains, lakes and glaciers are breathtaking.

With each new day comes a new experience whether you choose to explore the frozen waterfalls, glaciers, hike in the snow covered landscape, witness the amazing sights of Geysir and Gullfoss or immerse yourself in the history that surrounds Þingvellir. Each afternoon you can return to the comfort of your hotel for welcoming hot drinks by the roaring fire and sumptuous home-made meals. Several of the hotels also have hot tubs in which to sooth away the day under dramatic night skies. With luck you may also get to see the Northern Lights, well away from any light pollution.

As you return to Keflavik via the geothermal area of Krusuvik, you may wish to visit the famous Blue Lagoon to soak in the thermal waters or enjoy a spa treatment. The perfect end to a fabulous holiday.
