Description

Visit eastern Poland during the frozen chill of winter and witness a spectacular array of bird and wildlife combined with the culture and sometimes fading traditions of eastern Europe. The vast experience of our professional zoologist guide, backed by the knowledge of many researchers and local informers ensures the best possible sightings of mammals during the daylight hours. As night decends and the larger predators and owls emerge, spotlighting excursions mean the wildlife encounters can continue long into the night.

This 8 day tour will take you through Biebrza National Park and Bialowieza Primaeval Forest. Both are home to a variety of species, many of which are now extinct or rare in the more densely populated west. As you explore the rivers, frozen marshes and surrounding forests expect encounters with European bison, elk, wild boar, otter, beaver, red squirrel, pine marten, raccoon dog and very possibly wolf or even lynx.

Bird species whilst few at this time of the year are sufficient to satisfy birders as some tricky species are seen more easily in winter. For instance you are likely to observe nutctacker, hazel & black grouse, up to 9 species of woodpecker, white-tailed eagle, rough-legged buzzard and goshawk, plus crested tit and hawfinch. On open stretches of water you may find smew as well as black-throated and red-throated diver. Twite, Arctic redpoll, great grey shrike are almost certain to make an appearance whilst there are chances to find pygmy owl, eagle owl and Tengmalm's owl.

At the end of each exhilarating day tracking wildlife and observing birds, relax in the comfort of fine country manor house hotels, steeped in tradition and full of character and local style. Enjoy hearty wholesome meals, relax in front of an open fire or indulge in a hot tub or sauna.
