Arenal the mighty, active volcanoe is an incredible sight at night as our main country photo portrays, continuous red, centre-of-the-earth-hot bouncing boulders continuously descend its slopes. There are plenty of activities, both strenuous and relaxing in the area for all. Your next stop are the quiet waters of the reserve at Tortuguero on the north Caribbean coast. Wildlife is prolific here, otters, birds, caiman, monkeys and turtles are perhaps some of the highlights. Further down the coast and a short drive inland is an isolated lodge in the forests on the edge of La Amistad National Park, a huge reserve and a national treasure. There are a wide variety of activities offered at the lodge and you will learn a little about the forests here.

Next you can enjoy a break on the beaches of Puerto Viejo or take a walk and discover some of the coastal reserves of the region. The whole area here is very laid back and truly a Caribbean affair. This sets you up nicely for the short journey to the border with Panama and the boat trip out along the waterways to the Bocas del Toro archipelago. These forests islands have one small town, an ideal base, lovely beaches and plenty of natural wonders making them a perfect place to end your journey.
